My mother & I purchased our apartment in Bansko in early April 2006, at a time when there was a great deal of development activity. The Predela developer offered both a furnished and an unfurnished apartment price. At the time, we felt the developer was asking too much money for the mediocre range and quality of inventory, so we declined (like many other owners).
Two years later, and Predela was finally built and operational. We asked several owners about their choice of furnishings supplier and they kindly forwarded a few company names, along with how much they paid and some accompanying photographs. At this time, Furniture Box had taken up the front retail space within our apartment building, so we were pleased their convenient location was matched by recommendation and the superior look of their furnishings.
Thus, during our fourth visit to Bansko in late 2008, we met owners Eddy and Vladimir. Immediately we were struck by three things: they are genuinely friendly and switched-on, especially to funky/contemporary design; they are devastatingly honest and efficient; and, by their actions rather than words, they go the extra mile to help.
For example, having paid only for the furnishings, they subsequently installed said furnishings (including measuring and installing blinds) using their complimentary work team. They even tweaked the flaws in our apartment, such as poorly-located electric radiators and plugs; installing new ceiling lights and even fixing discreet wooden bars to prevent our leather sofas banging up against said radiators!
Having left the furnishing stage far too close to the winter ski season, the above was all the more incredible because they achieved it against the clock – even re-visiting our apartment on Christmas Eve to snag a couple of things required to meet a professional rental standard. But for their goodwill and diligence, we’d have lost a £600 booking there and then.
Nowadays, their ongoing savvy advice and local knowledge continues to assist our purchasing decisions and feel for the Bansko market trends. In fact, we consider them friends we can trust.
Looking back, I accept that we homed in on Furniture Box more for its convenient location in Predela than by sound research. Sure, we knew we had avoided cheap pine furniture and ended up with a slick yet practically furnished two-bed apartment. And we grudgingly accepted that some things, such as electrical items, cost a little more than the UK, perhaps because the scale of the UK mega furnishing stores was not available in Bulgaria in 2008. Overall, I’d say we forsook chasing several quotes from rival furnishing companies for excellent, personable service.
However, in hindsight, we also realise how incredibly fortunate we were! Some of the apparently sound furnishing companies around Bansko turned out to be either rank amateur outfits or straight con artists. We still hear of “green” apartment owners who sadly lacked our good fortune and fell prey to charlatans – perhaps because they fixated more on “saving” 1000 euros than they did on the fact that the Bulgarian business environment is not like their home country! It is sometimes closer to the truth to say that speculative trading zones in Bulgaria are like the “Wild West” – albeit with 2010 pazzaz and a plausible, contemporary veneer. In two words: caveat emptor!
I trust the above is helpful to prospective customers of Furniture Box. It will give you great confidence, having read this recommendation, when you subsequently discover you are sharing the same experience.
